For years, Dave Hollander has been an author and columnist writing on sports and social issues in national online and print publications including The Huffington Post, AOL Sports, SI.com (the Sports Illustrated website), and Interview as well as his cult following in alternative-weeklies all over the country, most notably during his years as a weekly contributor to the New York Press.
Hollander is perhaps best known for his hundreds of interviews with notable sports and show business personalities ranging from. From Terrell Owens, John Wooden, Anna Kournikova, Steve Nash, Mariano Rivera, George Plimpton, LeBron James, Danica Patrick, Charles Barkley, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. to Elmore Leonard, Ken Burns, Cheech and Chong, Steve Buscemi and Tyler Perry . The breadth of Hollander’s interview list is only exceeded by the refreshing level of candor his original style produces.
As Sports Illustrated columnist Selena Roberts remarked: “Dave Hollander doesn’t just interview sports figures. He has conversations with them that are so natural, you feel as if you are sitting around a kitchen table, talking sports and life with some of the most intriguing people. With his smart, and sometimes irreverent approach, Dave offers the thinking athlete room to think.”
His first sports book, 52 WEEKS: Interviews with Champions! (The Lyons Press), a collection of select interviews, memoirs and essays enjoyed critical praise nationwide. An attorney by trade, Hollander also co–authored a bestselling guide to law schools in America, The Princeton Review’s The Best Law Schools (Random House).
An event and live entertainment impresario of considerable note, Dave founded and directed The Arlene’s Grocery Picture Show (2001-2005), the largest (if you go by number of films) annual independent film festival in New York City. He now serves as “consigliore” to the popular New York nightspot, Arlene’s Grocery, which he ran for six years. During that time, Dave also created 3 Farms (2002-2004) , a free not-for-profit concert series held in Manhattan’s East River Park Amphitheater (the first live event held there after 9/11) featuring headline acts like David Johansen, Martha Wainwright and Clem Snide.
In 2004, for work his producing free music concerts and film festivals in Lower Manhattan, Hollander received the annual NYPD 7th Precinct “Award for Community Service”.
Hollander has also made his mark in television. He was the Executive Producer, Creator and writer for Gate D, a hip, fast-paced variety show for young fans of the New Jersey Nets, which aired on Fox Sports New York for two seasons, 1998-1999. He was also Co-Creator of Album Covers on MTV2, featuring Dashboard Confessional, Michael Stipe, Guster and The Violent Femmes, 2004.
In late-Fall 2008, Dave was chosen as inaugural Publisher and Editor-in-Chief to lead the start-up of the first-ever youth sports publication in NYC, New York Family Sports, which culminated in December 2009 with the enormously successful, first-ever city-wide youth sports awards show: The 2009 PINKY Awards with broadcast partner PIX-11.
Since Fall 2008, Hollander has served on the faculty for the New York University Preston Robert Tisch Center for Tourism, Hospitality and Sports Management masters program. He is also a popular speaker with universities, high schools, panels, conferences, corporate, community and civic groups frequently guest lecturing at Fordham, Yeshiva University Sy Syms School of Business, SoHo House, Film Anthology Archives, Concordia College and Long Island University. He has made numerous broadcast media appearances including CNN, FOX, WFAN radio and SIRIUS Satellite Radio.
